About Citabria

 

Interests


May 8th of each year Citabria (pronounced sih-TAH-bree-uh) celebrates the day she first went partner dancing. It all started with Country Western Two Steppin' at Oakland's Friday night women’s dance when it was called "Country Nights."

Citabria later fell in love with Lindy Hop. She has studied with extensively with many fabulous teachers from the Bay Area and beyond including Paul Overton, Sharon Ashe, Kevin St. Laurent and Carla Heiney.

Next came ballroom. In 2000, having completed with Honors the Bronze and Silver Levels of Diane Jarmolow's Teacher Training College in the American Style Smooth, Latin and Night Club sections, Citabria earned High Honors on the DVIDA American Style Basic Teacher Test and Honors on the DVIDA Bronze International Foxtrot and Waltz tests.

 

Competitions


Citabria has competed in straight and same-sex ballroom competitions both locally and abroad. She and her Lindy Hop partner took Gold in Fast Swing at the August '05 United States Same-Sex Dance Championships. At the 2006 Gay Games in Chicago, she and her Standard partner Zoe Balfour took the Bronze medal in the A level Women's Standard Ballroom competition, and at the 2006 OutGames in Montreal, they took 4th in A level Women's Standard. Several of her students also did well at the Gay Games, including one couple taking Gold in the E level of Women's Standard.

In the US Championships in Orlando, Florida on June 2nd, 2007, Zoe and Citabria took first in women's standard and are the current women's US Champions. They look forward to defending their title at the US Campionships in NYC in August of 2008.

Citabria and Zoe took first in the A level Women's International Standard at the California State Championships at the 2008 April Follies, making them the women's state champions for the second year in a row.

At the 2007 EuroGames in Antwerp, Citabria and Zoe took 7th in the A level women's International Standard.

Citabria and Zoe took 7th in the A level Women's Standard division 2nd in the A level women's "senior" division at the 2008 EuroGames in Barcelona, Spain.

Currently Citabria & Zoe are the North American Same-sex women's standard champions after competing at the 5 Boros Competition in New York.

Teaching & Performing


“Learning to Fly,” the documentary which followed Citabria and Zoe’s Sunday International Standard Ballroom classes to their success at the 2006 Gay Games, premiered June 16th in Frameline’s International LGBT Film Festival.

Citabria has taught, performed and DJed with many organizations including SwingOUT! and Rainbow Ballroom. She has performed at the annual parties of companies including Wells Fargo and Ebay. She teaches at various studios and dances including The Metronome Dance Center, The Allegro Ballroom, Just Dance Ballroom, Sundance Saloon and Trip the Light Fantastic.

Citabria is available for private lessons, DJing, classes & parties in: Night Club dances including Salsa, Night Club Two Step, East & West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Country Two-Step, line dances...and more. American and International Style dances including Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha...and more.

She is based in Oakland, but can be persuaded to travel all over the Bay Area and possibly beyond.
